Quarantine and Chill: Movies For Jane Austen Fans

With most of the world homebound due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it’s a good thing that streaming services such as Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ are available to provide a nice distraction. As a film lover, I wanted to share some of my favorite movies that will help you pass the time.

This will be a series of articles as I’ve watched a LOT of cinema and have numerous favorite movies. The first list is for Jane Austen lovers because there isn’t anything better than romance, humor, and a strong female lead. Here are some suggestions of movies to watch while you’re cozied up on your couch for days:

The Jane Austen Book Club

A romantic comedy about six people who form a book club that meets over six months to discuss Jane Austen’s six novels. The novels end up being a guide for the members of the book club as they struggle through their own personal and romantic woes. The characters are loveable and played by a charming ensemble cast which includes Kathy Baker, Hugh Dancy, Emily Blunt, Maria Bello, Marc Blucas, and Jimmy Smits.

Austenland

A fun comedy about Jane Austen fandom. A fan goes to the themed resort Austenland in search of Mr. Darcy and finds that the regency era isn’t what she expected. Keri Russell is great in the title role but Jennifer Coolidge steals the movie as her wacky friend and fellow Austenland guest.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is exactly how it sounds. The basic plot of the classic Jane Austen novel is followed but with the addition of zombies. The Bennett sisters are kickass martial arts experts and Mr. Darcy is an arrogant zombie killer. Together they overcome their romantic obstacles while saving the English countryside from the reanimated dead.

Emma

For those who weren’t able to get to the theaters before lockdown, the latest adaptation of Austen’s classic novel Emma is now available online. The brightly colored comedy stars rising star Anya Taylor-Joy as spoiled matchmaker Emma whose constant interference in her friends’ love lives lead to some awkward misunderstandings.

Becoming Jane

This movie is about Jane Austen’s early life and own brief romance before she became a beloved author. In particular, it focuses on her relationship with Tom Lefroy, the inspiration for Mr. Darcy.

Pride & Prejudice

Quite possibly the most swoon-worthy Austen film ever. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen have chemistry in spades and their portrayals of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are nothing short of perfection. Every Jane Austen fan has probably watched this movie a million times.
