Super Scientific Soap Poll: How Do You Feel About Aiden’s Story?

Last week on General Hospital, Franco and Liz discussed the possibility that Aiden may be gay. It has been the subject of much discussion on social media, including tweets from non-profit humanitarian organization PFLAG National.

GH began tackling the topic of Aiden’s bullying and struggles to fit in with other kids in August when his older brother Cameron gave him a hard time for requesting princess pencils for school. We later learned that Liz’s youngest was bullied for being different. Kids were calling him “Gayden” and targeting him online. His brothers were uncertain how to handle it. Cameron wanted to fight the other kids but Jake, perhaps wary of becoming a target himself, leaned more towards avoidance as a solution.

When Jake told Franco and Liz what the other kids were saying about Aiden, they had a frank conversation about the possibility of Aiden being gay. They don’t want to discourage Aiden from being himself but also feel the need to protect him from less open-minded individuals.

I’m really enjoying the story. I love seeing Friz as a solid family unit and them navigating co-parenting together. The little dude that plays Aiden, Jason David, is just adorable and doing a great job with the material.

I appreciated Elizabeth stating that her thinking Aiden may by gay had nothing to go with his love for baking but something she’s wondered for a while but never verbalized.

Franco and Elizabeth presented as two parents who just want to do right by their kid. Elizabeth wanting to let Aiden to bring the cupcakes to school, if that’s what he wanted, and not discourage him from being himself was a touching moment. Asking Jake to be there for his brother when needed at school and look out for him was a little heartbreaking. She just wanted her son to be himself but knows that may bring him pain from others less accepting and understanding that not everyone fits into this neat little box of Society norms.

I’d love to see more of the 3 brothers together and Cam and Jake, along with Elizabeth and Franco, helping Aiden navigate through this time in his life. It’s likely Aiden doesn’t even understand himself why he’s seen an different and needs as much support from his loving family as possible.

I’m excited for the storyline. I am glad that GH decided to introduce this early instead of when Aiden is a teen, like most soaps do. Anything that highlights Friz as a family unit is great, Becky and Roger really excel and this kind of material and the story is definitely in good hand with all involved.

At first I was reluctant for GH to tell a gay storyline with an 8 year old kid. I thought the show would most likely mess it up, that Aiden was too young and let’s face it, there’s more romantic stories for straight characters than for gay characters (look at Felix, Lucas and Brad who are never on). I realize I was wrong after last week scenes. GH can tell a good story when it really wants to. Roger Howarth and Rebecca Herbst will do the story justice. Everything Franco and Elizabeth discussed was important and the scenes felt real. It was also crucial that Elizabeth said she’s been thinking Aiden might be gay for some time and not because of the baking, if not, GH would perpetuate a stupid stereotype. Aiden will figure out who he is eventually. Now the story can go back to the bullying and how to stop it.
Also, after reading testimonies on twitter about how the story hit close to home, how the bullying started very young for some, sometime before they even knew they were gay, I believe now is a good time to tell the story and not just when Aiden is a teenager.

I voted for enjoying the family working together. I love seeing Friz work in unison. They talk about their concerns then plan on a course of action. Both are open minded to the possibility of Aiden being gay. There is no hesitation in their support of him either. Franco expressed what many of us would feel in that situation. While you love and and encourage your child to be who he is, there are those that don’t. The world is a cruel place for the LGBTQ community and probably even harder for those that are children. We don’t know if Aiden is gay or just has interests outside of what some view as normal for that age. For me .his love of baking is a joy to watch. Put a mixer and some baking ingredients in that boy’s hands and his face lights up. I’m glad that Friz realize that Aiden’s interest in baking does not mean he’s gay. The real problem facing Aiden is bullying. Now we see he’s also being targeted by cyber bullying. This is cause for concern and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

This story is finally getting interesting. I hope that show continues to treat it with respect and honesty. I’d like to see them help Aiden become strong and confident. That is the first step in dealing with bullies.
